Obadiah Mailafia, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday, February 13, claimed that up to 20% of bank notes currently in circulation was counterfeit
. He stated that when fake currencies of that magnitude circulate, original currencies become scarce.
In a swift reaction, the Central Bank of Nigeria dismissed the allegation, saying only less than one per cent of bank notes in circulation can be considered to be counterfeit.
